After a difficult return from the international break, Marseille coach Bruno Genesio publicly criticised his players’ lack of attacking impact, including Amine Gouiri, the Algerian international forward expected at Angers to bounce back.
Olympique de Marseille are going through a tricky spell in terms of results: only two wins in their last eight matches. In this context, Bruno Genesio spoke critically about the lack of attacking impact from some of his players.
Amine Gouiri is among those in the firing line. The autumn international break proved complicated for the Algerian forward, who has been short of confidence in front of goal in recent outings for the Olympians. Yet he was among the most prolific attackers in Ligue 1 at the start of the season.
Criticism over attacking commitment
Publicly, Genesio stressed that those who came on or started should have contributed much more at the end of the match. The criticism focuses in particular on the lack of commitment and authority in the opposition penalty area. “Our end to the match, yes, perhaps those who came on could or should have contributed more,” he said, according to Foot Afrique.
These comments apply both to the players who came off the bench and those who started.
A measured response and a reminder of standards
The coach nevertheless showed a degree of restraint: “I don’t like commenting on my players’ performances.” He also recalled the standards of rigour and efficiency needed to compete at the top of the league.
Despite this criticism and the coach’s warnings, Gouiri is still expected to start in the upcoming fixtures. However, his status as an undisputed key man in Marseille’s attack must be confirmed: he will need to rediscover his immediate effectiveness to keep it.
His early-season numbers show his potential, but Marseille’s points tally, with only two wins in eight matches, demands immediate answers.
Angers, the first test of the response
The trip to Angers gives Marseille a chance to turn around a difficult run of results. Gouiri is expected to step up and respond.
Beyond the league table, Marseille’s attacking credibility is at stake. The match at Angers will be the first test of the expected response.
