Aston Villa: Wan-Bissaka out for at least a month, Leopards sweat on scan results

Injured his hamstring in Aston Villa’s win over Newcastle, Aaron Wan-Bissaka will be out for at least a month. The DR Congo right-back is also highly doubtful for the November qualifiers.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka asked to come off in the 77th minute of Aston Villa’s 1-0 Premier League win over Newcastle United, reports Foot Africa. Sports Mole states that he had injured his hamstring.

Initial examinations indicate a minimum of one month on the sidelines, which could stretch to eight weeks depending on the severity of the damage, again according to Sports Mole. Definitive results from further radiological scans are awaited in Birmingham. The 28-year-old has already been officially ruled out of Wednesday’s Champions League match against Viking FK.

Emery watches on, Wissa sympathises

As he left the pitch, his DR Congo teammate Yoane Wissa, the Newcastle striker and first-choice international, came over to check on him on the turf, reports Foot Africa. An exchange between two Leopards internationals, one in the Magpies shirt, the other on loan at Villa.

Unai Emery, the Aston Villa head coach, commented on his right-back’s withdrawal: “I think Wan-Bissaka has injured his hamstring, he put in an excellent performance,” he said, according to Foot Africa.

A defence in tatters

The blow is all the harder for Aston Villa with the treatment room filling up. Ian Maatsen has an ankle problem and Matteo Ruggeri a hamstring injury, Sports Mole reports. With Wan-Bissaka, part of the defensive line is missing.

Having arrived on loan from West Ham United, Wan-Bissaka has made 6 league appearances for the Villans this season, according to Wikipedia. He also has 18 caps for DR Congo since 2025.

City loom, Leopards in limbo

The schedule is packed. After the Champions League match against Viking FK on Wednesday 21 October, Aston Villa face Manchester City in a Premier League blockbuster on Saturday 24 October. Emery’s staff will have to prepare for it without their right-back, while awaiting further news on the exact severity of the injury.

For the Leopards, the uncertainty is just as great. According to Kivu Morning Post, Wan-Bissaka is highly doubtful for the next round of African qualifiers in November 2026. The definitive results of the Birmingham scans are expected to settle the matter.
