Lorient: Dembo Sylla, from unwanted to undroppable!

  • EN, Guinea

Long regarded as an unwanted player, Guinean right-back Dembo Sylla has now established himself as an undroppable starter at Lorient, on the right side of the defence, with six Ligue 1 starts this season.

Dembo Sylla was long regarded as an unwanted player, according to AfricaFoot. Having arrived at Lorient in summer 2023 on a five-year deal, the 23-year-old Guinean international right-back had to go through three successive loans to find playing time.

This season he has settled on the right side of Lorient’s defence, to the point of being described as an undroppable starter by AfricaFoot. Born on 10 November 2002 in Laval, he has six Ligue 1 starts, 35 duels won and an average of 2.33 balls recovered per match, according to Ligue 1 data.

A path of successive loans

Before establishing himself at Les Merlus, Dembo Sylla had to learn his trade elsewhere. Trained at Stade Lavallois from the U9 age group, he signed his first professional contract on 8 August 2022 and played 30 Ligue 2 matches in Mayenne, according to the Laval club and Wikipedia. His arrival at Lorient in summer 2023, for five years, was not enough to open up a lasting place in the team.

Lorient then loaned him out three times. A first loan to Rodez AF in Ligue 2, early in 2024, saw him play 15 matches. The following season he went to Belgium and FCV Dender EH, with 20 games in 2024-2025. Finally, in the 2025-2026 campaign, he wore the colours of Red Star FC, with 31 matches to his name, according to Ligue 1 and Wikipedia.

The numbers speak for themselves

This season Dembo Sylla has changed status. His six Ligue 1 starts with Lorient reflect his now-established role on the right flank. He has 35 duels won and 2.33 balls recovered per match, again according to Ligue 1.

His market value is estimated at €1.5 million by Transfermarkt. The player himself is aware of the road still ahead: “I’ll need personality to impose myself,” he told Lorient.

A future still to be confirmed

At 23, Dembo Sylla already has international experience. A Guinea international since 2023, he has 15 caps for the Syli National, according to Transfermarkt and Wikipedia. He is also the brother of French Olympic athlete Sounkamba Sylla.

The next Ligue 1 matchday with Lorient should allow him to continue his run of starts. His loans at Rodez AF, FCV Dender EH and Red Star FC make up the path that preceded this status as a starter.
