Tottenham: Marmoush breaks his duck and hands Spurs their first win

  • Egypt, EN

Egyptian striker Omar Marmoush scored his first goal in a Tottenham shirt, in the 59th minute, putting Spurs back in front against Coventry (3-1) and securing their first Premier League win of the season.

It took until the 59th minute for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to erupt. Omar Marmoush found the net for the first time in his new colours, restoring Spurs’ lead against Coventry City. The goal came in reply to Jack Rudoni’s equaliser early in the second half.

Maddison opens, Marmoush turns the screw

Before this match, Tottenham had not won a single game this season. According to Punch Newspapers, the club were the only side in the top six tiers of English football in that position. The visit of Coventry, in the closing match of matchday 7, offered the chance to end that run, with head coach Roberto De Zerbi watching on.

The evening had started well for the Londoners. As early as the 14th minute, James Maddison, Spurs’ attacking midfielder, opened the scoring with a curling strike into the top corner from a Mohammed Kudus pass, Punch Newspapers reports.

But Coventry fought their way back into the game, Rudoni equalising early in the second half. Marmoush responded in the 59th minute: the Egyptian scored his very first goal in Tottenham colours, according to KingFut, restoring his side’s lead. Ben Davies, the Spurs defender, then sealed the score late on to guarantee the three points (Punch Newspapers).

A personal drought ended

The goal also ends Omar Marmoush’s personal drought in competitive matches for the London club, KingFut notes. The striker, an Egypt international, had been waiting for that first competitive goal in a Spurs shirt.

Before this win, Tottenham sat bottom of the table with a record of three draws and three defeats from the first six matchdays, according to KingFut. During the international break, Roberto De Zerbi had taken his squad to a training camp in Marbella, in southern Spain (Punch Newspapers).

Six points and Everton on the horizon

Thanks to this win in the closing match of matchday 7, Roberto De Zerbi’s men now have 6 points, KingFut reports.

Roberto De Zerbi did, however, highlight his team’s shortcomings: “I think we played well, but in the last third we have to improve,” he said, according to KingFut.

Tottenham will host Everton this Saturday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, again in the Premier League (KingFut).
