Tottenham: Marmoush off with calf concern, De Zerbi plays it down

  • Egypt, EN

Omar Marmoush, the Tottenham striker, scored his first goal in the shirt in the 3-1 win over Coventry City, but was forced off holding his right calf. Roberto De Zerbi, the Spurs head coach, is playing down the concern.

Omar Marmoush’s first goal in a Tottenham shirt comes with a fresh fitness worry. The Egyptian striker opened his account in the 58th minute against Coventry City, in the Spurs’ first Premier League win of the season (3-1), according to Goal.com. Shortly afterwards, the 27-year-old had to make way in the second half, replaced by Mathys Tel, holding his right calf, the Evening Standard reports.

The win comes in an already tricky physical context: Andy Robertson and Tosin Adarabioyo also went off injured during the match, the newspaper adds. In his post-match press conference, Roberto De Zerbi was keen to play things down.

“No injuries, nothing important”

Asked about his striker’s condition, the Italian coach gave a reassuring message to journalists: “No, no, no, I think there are no injuries, nothing important.” In essence, no injury and no serious problem as far as he is concerned. The remark, reported by the Evening Standard, came with no medical detail.

De Zerbi was speaking after a match in which Tottenham saw several of their players go off. Besides Marmoush, Robertson and Adarabioyo left the pitch injured, and Destiny Udogie was already absent, having picked up a knee problem against Manchester United, again according to the Evening Standard.

Frank Lampard’s protest

The other talking point of the evening was the validity of Marmoush’s goal. Frank Lampard, the Coventry City coach, strongly disputed the move, denouncing a contentious contact on Milan van Ewijk’s face in the build-up, according to the Evening Standard. The goal therefore remains contested.

The win lifted Tottenham from 20th to 16th in the Premier League table, after an opening run of three draws and three defeats, according to Goal.com.

On loan from Manchester City

Marmoush’s English journey began in January 2025 in Manchester City colours, where he scored 10 goals, the Evening Standard recalls. This summer, the Egyptian striker joined Tottenham on loan with an option to buy, again according to the same outlet.

Handed a start up front to make up for Dominic Solanke’s lack of cutting edge, he opened his account after 423 minutes of play for the Spurs, Ahraminfo reports. The player himself was delighted after the match, in comments reported by Goal.com: “We are so, so happy. We have had good performances in that last week but haven’t got the end result of a win. Very happy to win our first game today also happy to score my first goal for Tottenham. We will build on this.”

Tottenham travel to Stamford Bridge on Saturday 24 October 2026, to face Chelsea in the Premier League.
