On his first Champions League start, Cameroonian left-back Yvan Dibango provided three assists for LASK, who were beaten 3-6 by Liverpool on 14 October 2026.
On 14 October 2026, LASK lost 3-6 to Liverpool in the Champions League. Yet Yvan Dibango lit up the evening: on his first start in Europe’s premier club competition, the Cameroonian left-back provided three assists, according to Foot Africa and Live Mercato.
His first assist set up midfielder Robert Ljubičić in the 63rd minute. He then teed up attacking midfielder Florian Flecker in the 74th and 77th minutes. At the other end, Liverpool forward Bradley Barcola scored a hat-trick, in the 37th, 66th and 67th minutes.
Three assists and a place in history
The performance places the Cameroonian in a very select group. According to Foot Africa, Dibango becomes only the third African player in history to record at least three assists in a single Champions League match, after Samuel Eto’o and Achraf Hakimi. Live Mercato notes that he is the second Cameroonian to achieve the feat in the competition, again after Eto’o.
The rest of the evening did not go LASK’s way. Besides Barcola’s hat-trick, Ronald Araújo, Jeremie Frimpong and Lewis Koumas scored Liverpool’s other three goals, Live Mercato reports. Statistically, according to CMRsport, Dibango moves provisionally top of the assist charts for this season’s Champions League.
A summer of comebacks for LASK
This European night comes in a season already defined by comebacks. In the summer qualifying round, LASK pulled off a remarkable feat by beating Celtic 5-1 after extra time, despite a 3-0 first-leg defeat. The Austrian club thus reached the Champions League group stage for the first time, Rythme du Sport recalls.
Dibango, for his part, had made his competitive debut this season in LASK’s 7-0 win over Kalsdorf in the Austrian Cup, according to L’équipe 237. His first Champions League start marks a new step up.
On to matchday three
LASK’s next fixture is matchday three of the Champions League league phase.
Dibango, already a Cameroon international, provided his three assists on his first Champions League match as a starter.
