AS Saint-Étienne: talks opened to extend Augustine Boakye

  • EN, Ghana

AS Saint-Étienne have opened talks to extend Augustine Boakye, their Ghanaian attacking midfielder nominated for the UNFP Player of the Month trophy, as interest grows from several European clubs.

The ASSE hierarchy have formally launched discussions to extend the contract of Augustine Boakye, their Ghanaian attacking midfielder, according to Mediasportif. Talks are under way, and their outcome is still awaited.

The timing is no accident. The Ghanaian has just been nominated for the UNFP Player of the Month trophy, a reward that recognises his recent performances in the green shirt. At the same time, the Saint-Étienne bosses want to secure the future of a player who has become central, in the face of growing interest from several European sides, according to Mediasportif and Livefoot.

A key part of the set-up

On the pitch, Augustine Boakye is a key part of the tactical set-up of Ian Cathro, the ASSE head coach. The manager sees him as such this season, Mediasportif reports. The nomination comes after his recent performances.

According to the same source, the negotiations with the attacking midfielder’s representatives are part of a push for long-term contractual stability.

Five points clear at the top

The ASSE men’s team won 1-0 at Stade Bauer against Red Star, thanks to a goal from Irvin Cardona as early as the 14th minute, from a Breum assist, according to Mediasportif. The win allows Ian Cathro’s Greens to move five points clear at the top of the Ligue 2 table, ahead of Reims and Red Star.

In goal, Senegalese goalkeeper Mamour Ndiaye, who was covering for Gautier Larsonneur, injured in the knee on the previous matchday against Rodez, played the game and recorded his second clean sheet in Ligue 2.

A file to watch

There is still no telling when the talks over Boakye will conclude. The Saint-Étienne hierarchy have opened negotiations, but no signing has been announced to date. The interest from several European sides, mentioned by Mediasportif and Livefoot, makes the file all the more sensitive.

ASSE go into their next Ligue 2 matchday five points clear at the top, with the extension of their Ghanaian midfielder still to be sealed.
