Driven by striker Albert Kangwanda and attacking midfielder Maxi Mpia Nzengeli, Young Africans crushed CFFA 4-0 in the first leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round.
The weekend delivered its share of emphatic scorelines on African pitches. According to the official round-up published by Foot Gabon, seven of the fifteen CAF Champions League second preliminary round ties ended in away wins. Young Africans produced the most spectacular demonstration of that trend.
The Tanzanian club won 4-0 in Antananarivo against Madagascar’s CFFA. Two Congolese players were on the scoresheet: Albert Kangwanda, who struck in the 47th minute, and Maxi Mpia Nzengeli, scorer of the fourth goal in the 59th.
Four goals, two Congolese
Cheikh Touré had opened the scoring in the 39th minute, just before half-time. After the break, Kangwanda netted the second, then Mudathir Yahya made it three in the 54th before Mpia Nzengeli completed the rout five minutes later, according to Ahraminfo. The Tanzanian club therefore take a comfortable cushion into the second leg.
With Touré and Yahya, that makes four different players who found the back of the net against CFFA.
Berkane and Colombe strike away from home
RS Berkane also made a success of their trip. The Moroccans won 2-0 at Mali’s Star Sport Academy, thanks to a brace from striker Oussama Lamlioui in the 14th and 45th minutes, according to Ahraminfo. A lead secured before the break that puts Berkane in a strong position.
Cameroon’s Colombe Sportive du Dja et Lobo also claimed victory away from home, beating Teungueth FC in Senegal 2-0. At the same time, Sudan’s Al Hilal defeated Sidama Coffee 2-0 in Ethiopia. Three away trips, three wins without conceding a goal.
Espérance beaten, Mazembe held
Not every away side fared the same. Espérance de Tunis lost 1-0 in Libya to Asswehly SC, through a goal from Ayoub Ayed, according to Ahraminfo. The Tunisians will need to turn the tie around in the second leg.
In Lubumbashi, TP Mazembe were held to a 1-1 draw by Club Africain of Tunis, according to Foot RDC and Ahraminfo. The draw leaves the tie wide open ahead of the return leg.
The sixteen qualifiers for the CAF Champions League group stage will be decided after the second leg, APA News and Foot Gabon recall. The second legs of the second preliminary round are scheduled for 23-25 October 2026, before the group stage kicks off at the end of November.
