Thanks to a goal from Ahmed Sherif in the 26th minute, Zamalek beat Petrol Assiout 1-0 and moved to the top of the Egyptian league with 16 points, ahead of their return match against APR in the CAF Champions League.

This Tuesday, 20 October, at the Borg El-Arab Stadium, the White Knights of Cairo defeated Petrol Assiout 1-0 on matchday 7 of the Egyptian league, reports Al-Ahram Hebdo. The only goal of the game was scored by striker Ahmed Sherif in the 26th minute.

A narrow win that, according to the same source, gives the Egyptians a boost before the decisive second leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round against Armée Patriotique Rwandaise (APR FC). Thanks to this result, the Cairo club moves to 16 points and takes top spot in the Egyptian Premier League.

A defensive blunder and a right-footed strike

Sherif’s goal came from a defensive blunder by the opposition. The striker nicked the ball before beating Petrol Assiout goalkeeper Amgad Youssef with a right-footed shot to his right, details Al-Ahram Hebdo. It was an advantage the Cairo side managed to hold until the final whistle.

They then had to work hard to preserve it. Early in the second half, Zamalek goalkeeper Mohamed Awad and defender Fattouh cleared a ball off their own line, again according to the same outlet. With the scoreline standing at just one goal, every intervention counted.

A third league goal for Sherif

This was Sherif’s third goal in the league this season. It is also his fifth goal contribution in all competitions, Al-Ahram Hebdo points out, adding that the striker has also provided two assists in the 2026-2027 CAF Champions League. On Tuesday, he was making his eighth appearance of the season for Zamalek.

Last season, he was involved in 7 goals in 32 matches, according to the same source.

Gihad forced off injured, APR in sight

The match was not without incident for Zamalek. Midfielder Mahmoud Gihad went off injured in the 38th minute, replaced by Mohamed Farag. Al-Ahram Hebdo does not specify the nature or severity of the injury.

Zamalek will now face APR FC in the second leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round. The Egyptian outlet does not specify the date of the match.
